Background of the Study
Transportation management is a critical component of supply chain management that ensures the efficient movement of goods from suppliers to manufacturers and ultimately to customers. In the case of Dangote Cement Plc, a key player in Nigeria’s cement manufacturing industry, transportation management plays a pivotal role in maintaining the efficiency and effectiveness of its supply chain. Located in Kebbi State, Dangote Cement operates in a region with unique logistical challenges, including the need to optimize transportation routes, manage delivery schedules, and maintain fleet efficiency. These factors are essential for ensuring the timely delivery of cement products to customers while minimizing operational costs.
Effective transportation management includes the strategic planning of transport routes, selection of the right transportation modes, and the use of technology to track and monitor deliveries. With the cement industry’s reliance on bulk transportation, where large quantities of cement must be moved over vast distances, any inefficiencies in transportation can lead to delays, increased costs, and poor customer satisfaction. As such, transportation management directly influences supply chain performance by affecting the lead time, delivery reliability, and overall operational efficiency. This study will explore how Dangote Cement Plc’s transportation management strategies impact its supply chain performance, with a focus on efficiency, cost reduction, and customer satisfaction.
